Rapé

Rapè is an Amazonian medicine made mainly from powdered tobacco and is generally, but not exclusively, combined with ashes from tree barks and other plants. It is blown into each nostril with an instrument specially made for it. Each tribe gives it its particular name according to its language, but it is mostly known by the name it adopted in the not too distant past and that the French used to describe this tobacco powder, rapé. Rapé is a French word that means grated, grated tobacco.

Rapé is used ceremonially and ritually, as well as for hunting, and casually. It is very common to see them returning from their fields, hunting or work in general and get together to use rapé. Two tools are used for this, for self-application the kuripe is used and to pass it on to others the tepi is used. These are usually made of bone, bamboo or different types of wood.

There are many different recipes among the various ethnic groups that use it. To begin with, the tobacco itself can be prepared in two main ways, one known as moe tobacco and the other as tobacco de curda, these tobaccos are then mixed with different ashes from different trees, each with different medicinal properties. Some recipes also include different plants or seeds that are used in the mixtures and that give particular characteristics to each type of snuff. The traditional preparation is arduous and requires a lot of work until the tobacco is ground into a very fine powder that is then mixed with the other ingredients. There are some rapés without tobacco and also some that use nothing but tobacco, without ashes or any other plant.

Rapé has many uses and, although there is a difference between one and the other, it can be said that they all help to center and ground the body, to calm and focus the mind to be able to pray in a concentrated way, it is used to cleanse the thoughts , to calm the emotions, some more specifically to open the heart and in higher doses to cleanse physically, psycho-emotionally and energetically through purging.

For its deepest use, rapé must be used with a clear and sustained intention.
Rapé (nicotine), at a biochemical level, stimulates the production of dopamine, epinephrine and acetylcholine, neurotransmitters that help strengthen concentration, elevate mood and facilitate a state of calm and presence that help connect with intuition without so many filters. It is used to clear the head of excess mucus, toxins and negative thoughts. Its use extends throughout the Amazon, but it is in Brazil where the strongest and finest varieties of snuff are found. In addition, the Nicotiana Rústica variety found in the state of Acre, Brazil, has an even higher concentration of nicotine than any other, making this variety the strongest known.

Sananga is a powerful medicine whose effects can be very surprising and wide-ranging. The main use is to dispel blockages and density, clear the mind, strengthen concentration and open internal and external vision. It is also said to help release the trauma of things that have been seen. It can help with premenstrual cramps and other pain as well as help with sinus problems and dust allergies and relaxes the nervous system by relaxing the optic nerve.

It is excellent medicine for the eyes and many vision problems such as glaucoma, tired eyesight, cataracts. It is very common to hear testimonies that the sight improves and becomes sharper, at least for a few days.
The plant is used to remove the cold from the body, to strengthen the nervous system, as an antiparasitic.

It is a plant of which there are not many studies and that continues to surprise those of us who use it. Understanding Rapé: A Sacred Medicine for Mind, Body, and Spirit

Rapé is more than a physical remedy—it is a spiritual ally on the journey of self-discovery and healing. Unlike recreational tobacco, Rapé is a sacred tool that invites profound spiritual growth and expanded states of consciousness.

Physical and Spiritual Benefits
On a physical level, Rapé cleanses and detoxifies the body with its natural antibacterial properties, stimulates the nervous system, and enhances brain activity. Spiritually, it unblocks energy channels, balances the masculine and feminine energies within, opens the heart chakra, and purifies the aura, creating harmony between the body, mind, and spirit.

Keeping Your Rapé Fresh

To preserve the potency of your Rapé:

  • Store it in a cool, dry, and dark location.

  • Ensure the container is tightly sealed to protect it from moisture.

  • Avoid refrigeration, as condensation may form upon removal, compromising the quality of the Rapé.

A Note on Respect and Responsibility

Rapé is a plant-based substance meant to be approached with deep respect and intention. It is neither a recreational stimulant nor a drug but a sacred medicine with ancient origins. Proper use requires mindfulness and reverence for its spiritual and energetic power.

Guidelines for Safe Use:

  • Do not consume orally. Rapé is for ceremonial and topical application only.

  • Avoid combining with alcohol or using during pregnancy.

  • Be mindful of frequency. Due to its nicotine content, overuse can lead to dependency.

  • Handle with care. Rapé is a tool for healing, not entertainment.
